Flexible Heart Wrap for Continuous 3D Electrocardiac Monitoring
Feb 26, 2014
Even though we are in the most advanced age of technology, a 3 dimensional view of the heart does not really exist. Having a full dimenional view of the heart’s activity can lead to more effective treatment and further prevention. A research team at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Igor Efimov at Washington University created a 3 Dimensional printed sleeve with electrodes to sense the heart beat of a real life rabbit. . The sleeve can be printed to fit the exact size of each heart, which will expand and contract to follow the heart’s exact activity. The device is applied with no surgical instruments or incisions but rather just wrapping around the heart like a sleeve.
In addition to monitoring , the device can also act as a pacemaker and defibrillator. It will be interesting to see more to come.
